Member in the spotlight: Ans Vermijs

Ans Vermijs is a familiar face at our club. She drops by Black & White Community and Kafe regularly, and has been doing so for more than 8 years. She found her way to Black & White Community after getting a new hip, and she loved it straight away. As Ans puts it: “You walk in and you're wrapped in a warm welcome. The group classes took a little getting used to, but the nice thing is that you get to know the other participants. The instructors are lovely people, every single one of them, and that makes Black & White a really great place to be.”

The Pilates class with Babs is Ans's favourite, and she likes to alternate it with power and other yoga classes such as hot yoga, vinyasa and Pilates. She's also delighted with the events we organise, and every year you'll find her at our Breda Spirit Festival. Black & White has helped her grow as a person: she has become more interested in yoga and is learning to relax now and then, rather than always pushing on. She calls Black & White Community her “second home”.

Her advice for anyone thinking about joining: “Come and give it a try, and I'm sure you'll love it.”

“Why can't I stick with it?”

You know you feel good when you exercise regularly, eat healthily and go to your yoga class, so why is it so hard to keep it up? Staying motivated and consistently following a healthy lifestyle can be a challenge at times. But don't worry, we've got some tips to help you stay motivated and stick to your healthy lifestyle.

  • Set realistic goals: It's important to set goals that are achievable and realistic. If you set your expectations of yourself too high, it can lead to disappointment and a loss of motivation. Start with small, achievable goals and build from there.
  • Find your ‘why’: Identify the reasons you want to live a healthy lifestyle. Whether you want to improve your health, lose weight or boost your energy levels, having a clear ‘why’ will help you stay motivated, even at difficult moments.
  • Make a plan: Draw up a plan that helps you reach your goals. This could include planning your meals and workouts, setting up a weekly routine or finding a training partner. A good plan can help you stay organised and keep your focus.
  • Find joy in what you do: Choose activities you like and food you love. When you enjoy what you're doing, you're more likely to stick with it in the long run. Try out different sports and recipes to discover what suits you best.
  • Reward yourself: Set rewards for reaching your goals. These can be small rewards, like a relaxing bath after a week of healthy eating, or bigger ones, like a new outfit when you've reached a milestone. Rewarding yourself can strengthen your motivation and help you keep going.
  • Look for support: It can help to have a support system. This could be friends or family members who encourage and support you on your journey towards a healthy lifestyle. Together you're stronger, and you can motivate each other.

Remember that motivation can fluctuate at times, and that's normal. The most important thing is not to be too hard on yourself when you have an off day. Just pick up where you left off and keep doing your best. With the right mindset, you can stick to your healthy lifestyle and reach your goals. Good luck!

Boxing

One of the workouts we run in our outdoor space is boxing. We'll look at the benefits of this sport, show you how many calories you can burn during a boxing training session and, of course, highlight just how fun and energetic the workouts are.

Boxing isn't just a great way to stay fit; it offers countless other benefits too. First of all, it's a fantastic cardiovascular workout. During a boxing training session your heart rate and breathing go up, which improves your stamina. Boxing also helps you build muscle strength and improve your coordination and balance. It's a full-body workout that helps you get stronger and fitter.

But how many calories can you actually burn during a boxing training session? Well, that depends on several factors, such as your weight, the intensity of the training and the length of the session. In general, though, you can expect to burn around 500-800 calories per hour. That makes boxing an effective way to lose weight and improve your fitness.

What makes our training sessions truly special is the enthusiasm and expertise of our trainers. Hanna, Sieneke, Ronn, Marcel and Victor are all passionate instructors who make sure every session is a great experience. They're driven to motivate and challenge you, while creating a safe and supportive environment. Whether you're a beginner or already have some boxing experience, our trainers will make sure you get the most out of every session.

So what are you waiting for? Discover for yourself how fun and effective boxing can be. Sign up for one of our boxing sessions and experience the benefits of this brilliant sport. We look forward to welcoming you!
